ABOUT
The Zanzibar Channel Crossing
Crossing the Zanzibar Channel, 40kms of East African downwind bliss.
Paddling 40km downwind across the Zanzibar Channel from Dar Es Salaam to the southern tip of Zanzibar island is an extraordinary and rare experience. This route, pioneered by a small group of paddlers from the Dar Es Salaam Yacht Club is as intriguing as it is challenging. Only a handful of paddlers have done this crossing and it could easily become one of the greats!
We will be based at the Coral Beach Resort on the picturesque Dar peninsula. We will have a 4 day window period to do the crossing and will select the best possible day to do it. On the alternate days we will explore the Dar coast with the best paddling for each day’s conditions.
The 40-kilometer downwind paddling adventure across the Zanzibar Channel presents an extraordinary opportunity not only to chalk up a unique paddle crossing, but also to experience the cultural diversity and natural wonders of this remarkable region. It’s an experience that combines the thrill of an ocean crossing with the allure of Tanzania’s captivating charm, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar have a captivating history. They are a melting pot of cultures and serve as the gateway to East Africa. We will encounter the local Swahili culture, characterized by its warm hospitality and rich heritage. Swahili phrases like “Pole Pole” (meaning “slowly, slowly”) and “Hakuna Matata” (meaning “no worries”) punctuate our interactions, reflecting the laid-back and joyful spirit of the locals.
Zanzibar, renowned as a popular island destination, offers a perfect blend of natural Indian Ocean beauty and historical significance. It’s a very special cultural experience. From its pristine beaches to its UNESCO World Heritage sites, the island captivates visitors with its rich heritage and stunning landscapes.

On our first day we will set up our surfskis in preparation. The fleet of surfskis on offer are a combination of Fenn Bluefins, Fenn XTS, as well as some Epic V7s.
We will be escorted by a support boat that will also bring the surfskis back after the crossing.
Any of the days that we don’t do the crossing we will paddle morning and evening along the popular and beautiful paddling routes that the Dar Es Salaam peninsula has to offer. We will also explore Dar Es Salaam a bit more.
Morning paddling is followed by a hearty breakfast at the hotel. Evening paddles are followed by dinner at one of the fantastic restaurants in the area.
CROSSING DAY
We will select the best possible day to do The Crossing. This means a downwind day, or if we have been skunked by no wind, we will muscle it out on the calmest day, knowing that a support boat is right there to pick you up if dire straits appear.
ARRIVING ON ZANZIBAR
When we arrive at what is called “Sandbank” on the southern tip of Zanzibar we will celebrate and be transported back to Dar by ferry.
DEPARTURE
Depending on what day we cross over we will either spend the remaining days in Dar Es Salaam or go straight to the airport from the Ferry.
