YOUR BASIC ITINERARY
DAYS 0, 1 & 2 – PADDLE CAPE RECIFE AND CAPE ST FRANCIS
Your adventure begins in the “Friendly City” Port Elizabeth by paddling around your first cape – Cape Recife. Here you will also ride the longest surfski wave in the world, with rides sometimes in excess of 2 minutes!
There are two launch and finish options. We would like to launch at Noordhoek and paddle to, and around Recife, or vice-versa. We are able to finish or start right near the Cape in the reserve, or we finish/start at Summerstrand.
Once done we take a short drive down the coast. You will be staying in the small coastal town of St. Francis, one of South Africa’s favourite ocean playgrounds and home to the highest mason structure in Southern Africa, the St Francis lighthouse. After working on your wave skills at the friendly surf break of St. Francis and perhaps some technique coaching on the nearby canals, you will paddle around your second Cape – Cape St. Francis. We will choose between a short “hop” around the cape starting at a protected secret launch on the wild side just near the tip of the cape, or we will do a longer paddle and launch/finish in Mostertshoek.
DAYS 3 & 4 – PADDLE CAPE SEAL AND THE KNYSNA HEADS
The adventure continues along the coast of the Garden Route. Your destination is the beautiful town of Plettenberg Bay. Based in Plett you will paddle around your third Cape – Cape Seal, or the Robberg peninsula, one of South Africa’s most precious marine protected areas and headland leading to Bahia Formosa, Plettenberg bay. We launch near Robberberg Beach #5 and want to paddle to “Die Eiland”, a massive natural sandbar on the other side. If not possible we do an out and back paddle.
The next day on the amazing Knysna Lagoon, home to the world’s only estuarine seahorses, you will paddle through the Knysna Heads, an unforgettable experience since it is as if passing through a massive natural ocean gateway. We will aim to leave at just before the high tide when the heads are at their calmest, and paddle along this remote coast to the beach of Buffels Bay.

DAYS 5 & 6 – PADDLE CAPE AGULHAS
You will then load up the skis for the next destination – the bottom of Africa! Based from the small coastal town of Arniston (which is a national monument and where locals still live a traditional fishing lifestyle); you will spend 2 days here, the Overberg region, famous for its immense bio-diversity.
During your stay you will visit the L’Agulhas Lighthouse, housing South Africa’s lighthouse museum and perhaps enjoy a meal at a restaurant at the bottom of Africa.
But before lunch you will do a landmark paddle. You will paddle around the southernmost tip of Africa – Cape Agulhas – and lay claim to have officially paddled the bottom of the continent.
We will start or finish in the small harbour of Struisbaai. The finish is right next to the Meisho Maru, a forgotten Japanese fishing trawler.
We will also endeavour a paddle from Struisbaai to Arniston, a route paddled by less than probably 20 people ever.
DAY 7, 8 & 9 – PADDLE THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE AND
Your adventure journey will end in Cape Town, one the most beautiful cities in the world. To finish off this most amazing adventure, you will be paddling around your last cape, the spectacular and iconic Cape of Good Hope.
Sir Francis Drake described it as “the fairest of them all”, and being the explorer he was, he most certainly knew what he was talking about. Set at the bottom of Africa, this Cape with its towering cliff faces is a fitting crescendo to the symphony of rugged, beautiful and, many times, treacherous coasts that lie to its west and east.
It is truly iconic and symbolic not only of its preceding coastlines but also as a gatekeeper to Cape Town and South Africa. To experience the Cape of Good Hope is to experience much of what it means to be South African. Bearing witness to it’s magnificence, it will leave an awe-inspiring picture embedded in your memory; an instant adrenaline recall to your emotions; and a fitting final paddle.
